Day 21: Into the Light
I woke up rather late. I had stayed up all night finishing up the final touches to this blog post, which now stood at around 9,000 words. That’s the equivalent of 20 pages of text! I didn’t realize I had written so much until I did a word count.
Of course I wasn’t online while I wrote all of this up. Most of it was written on my laptop and later uploaded to the web via my mother’s computer which is connected to the internet using a dial-up modem. Some days we get an ok connection, but more often it’s slow as a turtle and I can’t even get Google Reader up and running. ISDN connections are also available, but they are very expensive and there’s no guarantee that those lines are going to be any faster. I sincerely hope something will be done about this in the near future but I have a feeling it will be a while before broadband hits the streets over here.

Today we were off to Goshu’s gallery again to get this painting I’ve been rambling about. Although most of it would go out of my pocket, I still considered it as a gift, because these type of coincidences happen very rarely. The only reason I’m so obsessed about this particular piece is because I had drawn something similar to it over a decade ago. Although it was a different theme altogether, this was as close as I’d come to finding anything resembling it that had been painted by a true professional.
As the day draws to an end, I begin to realise that my journey was coming to an end. I was scheduled to leave back home tomorrow around 11 in the evening, although I wouldn’t hit Finnish soil until the day after. Time has gone by so fast, while at the same time it feels like I’ve been away for an eternity.
Time in general has a very different feel to it over here. There’s no sense of constantly being in a rush or having to be somewhere. Things just flow at their own pace and one doesn’t think more than a day in advance. I have a hard time remembering what day it is, although that’s normal since I’m on vacation. It’s just been so long since I’ve had such a long break that I had totally forgotten how cool this is! And what better place in which to spend my free time than a continent with plenty of sunshine and marvelous people and landscapes? It’s going to be hard to leave all of this behind.

Hi Niko, good to hear your flight went ok and you’re safely at your destination! We’re reading your posts (and envying a bit:), so please keep writing! It’s freezing here at the office, at Maarit’s desk only 18 degrees… so enjoy the warmth, have fun and relax!!!
Cheers, Mari
